New Delhi: A bus carrying school children was involved in a major accident in Haryana's Mahendragarh, resulting in the death of six students and injuries to at least 20 others, news agency PTI quoted police as saying. Initial findings indicate that the accident occurred as the bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle in the town of Kanina, leading to it flipping over.

The Superintendent of Police for Mahendragarh, Arsh Verma, said via telephone to PTI that the bus operator has been taken into custody.

In response to inquiries about the possibility of the driver being under the influence of alcohol, he stated, “The driver is currently detained, and we are in the process of conducting his medical evaluation, which will confirm whether he was inebriated at the time of the accident.”

Additional reports have raised concerns about the possibility of reckless driving by the driver, the Superintendent of Police further noted. He mentioned that the wounded students were immediately transported to a medical facility for emergency care.

Officials have reported that Seema Trikha, the Education Minister of Haryana, is en route to Mahendragarh.
