New Delhi: Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt can finally heave a sigh of relief as he walks free from Pune's Yerwada Jail. The 56-year-old actor was convicted in the Mumbai blasts case, where he completed his remaining 42-month sentence.

 

Now that he is a free man, let's take a look at the chronological events of the infamous Sanjay Dutt case:

 

March 12, 1993:

Mumbai hit by a series of bomb blasts, killing 257 deaths and injuring 713 injuries.

 

April 19, 1993:

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt gets arrested from Mumbai airport by the Crime Branch. He was held on charges of possession of an AK-56 rifle, a 9 mm pistol and ammunition.

 

April 28, 1993:

Dutt confesses to the police about possession of arms, however he had destroyed it.

 

May 5, 1993:

Sanjay Dutt granted interim bail by the Bombay High Court in the case.

 

July 4, 1994:

Dutt arrested again as trial court cancels his bail.

November 20, 1994:

Sanjay Dutt's U-turn on his confession.

 

October 1995:

Dutt writes to the Chief Justice, SC grants him bail.

 

October 1995:

After 15-month period, Dutt released from central prison.

 

November 2006:

Judgment hits hard. Dutt convicted under Arms Act and acquitted under TADA.

 

July 2007:

Sanjay Dutt pronounced with six years imprisonment.

August 2007:

Dutt challenges his conviction., moves SC.

 

November 2007:

Sanjay Dutt granted bail by SC.

 

November 2011:

Hearing starts in SC based on appeals filed by the actor and 100 other convicts.

 

March 2013:

Five year jail term declared by SC. Four weeks time granted to him by surrender.

 

October 2013:

14 day parole granted to the actor, however extended by another 14 days due to leg pain.

 

December 2013:

Out on 28 days parole, gets extension for another 28 days due to his wife Manyata's illness.

 

August 2015:

Dutt gets 30 day parole owing to daughter's nose surgery

 

January 6, 2016:

Actor set to walk out of jail on February 27, 2016.

 

February 25, 2016:

Dutt walks out free from of Pune's Yerwada Jail.
