BSP rules out reports of talks with NDA, UPA

Zeenews Bureau

Lucknow, May 15: With less than 24 hours remaining for the peoples’ verdict to come out and suspense still prevailing over the moves of regional parties, BSP on Friday rubbished reports of any talks with either the BJP-led NDA or the UPA led by the Congress.
The BSP clarified that there has been no secret meeting between party chief Mayawati and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani over a possible post-poll alliance.

The development comes in the wake of reports of a secret talk between BSP supremo Mayawati and BJP’s senior leader LK Advani two days back.

The clarification from the BSP comes at a time when all the top political parties have launched their best efforts in a bid to woo maximum support to outsmart each other in the number game.

BSP’s support is being considered crucial and both BJP and the Congress are trying to secure Mayawati by their side.

However, speculations doing the round also suggest that Mayawati may join the Congress camp and demand a cabinet berth if she is unable to become the prime minister.

The party insiders say that Mayawati would prefer "not to support a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led government that would antagonise Muslim voters.”

BSP has been gaining from a large section of breakaway Muslim voters, who have deserted the SP after the Kalyan Singh’s entry into its fold.

However, the BSP joining the Congress-led alliance would depend upon the exact numbers of seat which it gains after the declaration of results vis-à-vis the performance of other parties.

As of now, the BSP leader is said to be in close contact with the Left parties leading the so-called Third Front and will finalise the strategy after seeing their performance.

Political analysts say that Mayawati will not be able to repeat her sterling performance of the 2007 elections when she stunned everyone by netting 203 of the 403 seats in the Assembly to form a government in the country`s most populous state.

The BSP is tipped to get around 30 seats and can therefore play a significant role in government formation.
