Mules to carry poll materials in Uttrarakhand
|
Dehradun, May 11: With high altitude and difficult
terrain in Uttarakhand posing problems for transporting the
polling parties, the EC is relying on mules for carrying
election material, including EVMs, to the far-flung areas in
the state
The Election commission on Sunday, sent 99 polling
parties to different areas of the hill state where the
election would be held on May 13, official sources said here
today.
The parties would reach the far-flung areas like
Bahetra in Chamoli district, which is the most-farther area
from the road, with the help of mules, the EC sources said.
If the need be, helicopters can also be used, the
sources added.
Bahetra, 45 km away from the main road, is the most
remote area in the state. Similarly, the highest polling
station Niti is situated at a height of 11,000 feet.
There are other areas also like Hakora and Bona, which
are also situated far away from the roads.
During the Election campaign, political leaders and
workers have made extensive use of mules in various parts
of the hilly terrain.
Nearly 1000 villages in Uttarakhand are still deprived
of roads and electricity and the election commission finds it
tough to send poll agents and materials including EVMs there.
