The wholesale price index (WPI) rose in June by 1.62 percent, up from 0.79 percent in May. This keeps the inflation level in the positive domain for the third month after 17 months in the negative.

It is a 20-month high number.

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 1.62 percent (provisional) for the month of June, 2016 (over June, 2015) as compared to 0.79 percent (provisional) for the previous month and -2.13 percent during the corresponding month of the previous year. 

As per data on official wholesale price index (WPI) released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry, the annual inflation for potatoes was as much as 64.48 percent, while for pulses it was 26.61 percent. Vegetable prices were 16.91 percent higher.

Significantly, the final wholesale price index for the month of April was also revised to suggest a higher annual inflation rate of 0.79 percent against 0.34 percent as reported earlier.
