Mumbai, Jan 12: The friendship of Aamir Khan and Sachin Tendulkar goes back twenty years, when both were cubs in their separate fields. It was during a net practice that Aamir met Sachin. Their laconic ways and efforts to give their best in all that they try brought them together. Though it was some time before the shy guys opened up to each other and found perfectionism and talent common in each other. At that deciding meeting, Kapil had commented about Sachin to Aamir, “God willing, he will soon be in the team. He is also a rising star like you. And I have a feeling that both of you are equally talented in your respective fields.”
Then they both met on the sets of Aamir’s ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. Some years hence, they bonded big time when both trained together in 1995.
“I was training with Ali Morani. He used to work with Nanavati hospital and also the physiologist of the Indian cricket team at that time. We had trained for quite a few months together. We used to do cardio exercises together and had a lot of fun.” Aamir remembered fondly while talking to a news daily.
The Bollywood superstar even confessed to having a superstition about Sachin. He said, “I had a habit of sending him a `best of luck` text message before important matches. But I noticed that whenever I used to do that, Sachin used to get out cheaply. So, I stopped sending those messages.”
He even told an interesting anecdote, “In the last test match against England, when Sachin was on sixty, I wanted to send him a message that I have a feeling that he is going to score a century. But I stopped myself. I actually sent the message to Anjali. And he did score a century! Sachin called me after the match and said that Anjali had forwarded him the message immediately.”
When asked about what made the two biggies click together, he got contemplative and shrugged, “You never know why two people click and become friends. I can only tell you that he is one my best friends.”
