New Delhi, Nov 14: ‘Dostana’, a Karan Johar production, has everything it takes to become an unforgettable flick. It has comedy, style, great performances and the much required ‘oomph’ factor. This ‘Dharma Productions’ offering ends up being placed much better than what was being made out of it.

Tarun Mansukhani, the debutante director, has tried immensely hard to leave behind the Karan Johar (KJo) style of filmmaking and though this one is bound to have KJo touches, it ceases to be distinct. Mansukhani cooks up a broth that is hot, spicy and extremely sumptuous.

The movie that boasts of gays, tenant troubles and societal pressures takes an interesting look at a major reality of today where people are forced to change (at least pretend to) their sexual preferences to get things right for themselves.

‘Dostana’ carries forward the much loved Kanta Ben legacy from ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ reaching a whole new epitome of comic excellence. It is based in the great American hub of Miami, having as crux two men- Samir (Abhishek Bachchan) and Karan (John Abraham) involved in the tedious task of finding a home. After lots of vain efforts, the duo is succeeded in grabbing a place for themselves, the only precondition being that the two will have to pose as gays since the apartment is owned by a girl Neha (Priyanka Chopra). Neha agrees to share the apartment with the two since she takes them to be gay and not a threat to her.

The trio ends up becoming thick pals and soon friendship is transcended into love (KJo style) with both Samir and Karan falling for their beautiful roommate and then begins a competition with upmanship being the basis of it. While the duo is still struggling to outdo each other and win over Neha, enters Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol) and the rivalry is intensified leading to an interesting climax.

Besides an appealing plot, the film is beautifully decorated with small but fruitful performances by Bobby Deol (Priyanka’s love), Kirron Kher (Samir’s mother), Boman Irani (Fashion magazine’s gay editor) and Sushmita Mukherjee (Priyanka’s mom). It comes with splendid performances by the lead trio- with John doing much more than his sexy undie act, Abhishek making best use of his comic timing; funny expressions and the sexy Priyanka Chopra, riding high on the success of ‘Fashion’ doesn’t disappoint at all giving a fine show yet again.

There is enough required oomph, thanks to the actors’ styling by Aki Narula and Manish Malhotra. The peppy music adds to the hip feel and cool genre that this flick belongs to.

Now for the verdict- This one is not worth missing out as it gives just the right dose of everything you have been looking for after long. Go grab your tickets and that popcorn!

Four cheers for this wonderful attempt!
