Delhi votes for experienced leaders
New Delhi, Dec 10: For voters of Delhi age does matter, it seems, when it comes to selecting their elected representatives as 42 MLAs who made at the husting are over 45 plus. Nine legislators are over 60 plus including, septuagenarians and heavy weights like Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit (71), Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh (76) and V K Malhotra (77). Incidentally all the four MLAs, including two from Congress and one each from BJP and INLD, who are less than 35 years of age are also first timers in the fourth legislative assembly in the city.

From Congress, those who have crossed 65 years of age are Dikshit, Mangat Ram Singhal (66) from Adarsh Nagar, Kiran Walia (65) from Malviya Nagar, Chaudhary Prem Singh from Ambedkar Nagar, while Yoganand Shahstri from Mehrauli seat and Narendra Nath from Shahdara, both have attained the age of 65. From the BJP camp, those who will be seen in the fourth assembly are Malhotra and three timers O P Babbar from Tilak Nagar and Jagdish Mukhi from Janakpuri who have crossed 65. Malhotra is, however, yet to declare that whether he would like to retain his Lok Sabha seat or sit in Delhi Assembly as a leader of the opposition.

Of the total 25 Congress legislators who are in the age group of 45-60 years are Jaswant Singh (Narela), Surendra Pal Singh (Timarpur), Bijendra Singh (Nangloi Jaat), Raaj Kumar chauhan (Mangol Puri) Harishankar Gupta (Wazirpur) Parlhad Singh Swahney (Chandi Chowk), Kanwar Karan Singh (Model Town), Haroon Yusuf (Ballimaran), Mahabal Mishra (Dwarka), Tarvinder Singh Marwah (Jungpura), Chaudhary Mateen Singh (Seelam Pur), Ashok Kumar Walia (Laxmi Nagar), Ram Babu Sharma from Rohtash Nagar and Dayanand Chandela (Rajouri Garden).
