New Delhi, Dec 09: At least 702 candidates in the
national capital put up a dismal performance in the assembly
polls, losing their deposits as they failed to muster the
minimum of one sixth of the votes polled in their respective
constituencies.
These candidates include four from BJP and one from
Congress. The BJP candidates who lost their deposits are Talak
Sultan from Matia Mahal, Rajesh Sharma from Najafgarh,
Surender Kumar from Okhla and Khem Chand from Badarpur seats
respectively. The lone Congress candidate to lose deposit is
Diwan Singh Noyal from Karawal Nagar seat.
As per the rules of Election Commission, candidates
getting less than one-sixth of the votes polled in the
respective constituencies will forfeit their deposits. There
were 863 total candidates in the fray.
While the general candidates will lose their deposits of
Rs 5,000 each, the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe
candidates will have to forfeit Rs 2,500 each they deposited
during filing of nomination.
Maximum number of 23 candidates lost their deposits in
New Delhi seat where there were 25 candidates. Chief Minister
Sheila Dikshit and BJP`s Vijay Jolly were contesting from this
seat.
Similarly, in Karawal Nagar, about 21 candidates lost
their deposits while 20 candidates in Karari and 19 candidates
in Rajouri Garden seats had to face the same fate.
There are seven seats where over 15 candidates each in
these constituencies lost their deposits.
Ghonda is the only constituency where not a single
candidate lost his deposit. There were three candidates and
all of them got more than one-sixth of the votes cast.
