New Delhi, Dec 08: Mayawati-led BSP and INLD on Monday
opened their accounts in the Delhi assembly polls by bagging
one and two seats respectively in the keenly-fought elections.
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) nominee and sitting
councillor Bharat Singh defeated his nearest rival Kanwar
Singh Yadav from Congress by a margin of 12,453 votes in
Najafgarh seat.
The BSP, which hoped that its social engineering formula
will reap dividends in the polls, bagged two seats out of the
70 it contested.
Party nominee Surinder Kumar defeated his closest rival
Congress`s Balzor Singh by 3,039 votes in Gokalpur seat of
North-East Delhi.
The BSP also bagged the Badarpur seat with party
candidate Ram Singh Netaji getting 43,416 votes as against
Congress candidate Rambir Singh Bidhuri`s 40,111 votes.
However, Lalu Prasad-led RJD could not win even a single
seat even though it came to a sniffing distance with party
candidate Asif Mohammad Khan losing out to three-time Congress
MLA Parvez Hashmi by a razer thin margin of 400 votes.
The party finished second in Okhla constituency, where
Jamia Nagar is located.
Congress today retained power for the third consecutive
term in Delhi, winning 40 seats in the 70-member Assembly in a
keenly fought electoral battle.
